Jennifer Jones Signed For Play
by Sam Zolotow
(New York Times, August 23, 1954)
The initial Broadway appearance of Jennifer Jones, a leading Hollywood star, is heralded once more. This time the Academy Award winner for "The Song of Bernadette" (1944) actually has been signed by Lyn Austin and Thomas Noyes to act in "Portrait of a Lady."
The local premiere of the William Archibald dramatization of Henry James' book is planned for Dec. 9 under the direction of Jose Quintero, an up and coming director. "Portrait of a Lady" marks Mr. Archibald's second consecutive play to owe allegiance to Mr. James product, the first having been "The Innocents" (1950), based on "The Turn of the Screw".
Associated with the Austin/Noyes team in the presentation will be the powerful Producer's Theatre combine, consisting of Roger L. Stevens, Robert Whitehead and Robert W. Dowling.
Before rehearsals start in October, Miss Jones, who is the wife of David O. Selznick, screen producer, will rest at her Malibu beach home with her newly born daughter. In "Portrait of a Lady," the star has been commissioned to project "the spirited, charming, witty, extraordinary young lady from Albany, who sails to Europe, to live her life like a heroine in a novel."
These ebullient characteristics were to have been depicted previously by Olivia de Havilland. She was announced two seasons ago by Thomas Hammond.
