When newlyweds Robert and Phylis Walker moved to Hollywood in 1939, their dream was to be able to make a living by doing what they both loved best - acting. Reality soon set in when they found that job opportunities in the movie business were very limited if you did not have prior experience. They both applied for work at Republic Studios, a low budget studio known for it's quickie westerns and serials. At Republic, they churned out one movie per week. The studio heads did not have work for Robert but they hired Phylis at $75 per week. She was immediately signed to New Frontier, a western in a series The Three Mesquiteers. It was to be John Wayne's last in the series and he would be moving on to bigger projects. New Frontier is the story of the citizens of New Hope Valley whose land has been condemned for a new reservoir. It was a routine five day shoot and was hardly the type of film that could get an actress noticed. Jennifer did learn a lot about movie making however. Back to Film Index |
